Steeple Morden WW2 Airfield
Home first to an RAF Bomber Command squadron using I think Wellington bombers, then home to a USAF P51 Mustang fighter group, the 'Steeple Morden Strafers', so called because they used to fly to German airfields and strafe them.
A badly lost German Junkers 88 twin engined bomber landed here one night, thinking they were on home ground ,the confused crew were then quickly arrested.
Also Glenn Miller and his band played here in 1944.
The lists either side of the Mustang propeller are the men who never returned.

Some remaining original nissen huts on the airfield.

And down the road a bit some more airfield building remains.

Back across the A505 and down the A10 a bit then 6 or 7 miles into the sticks is the remains of Nuthampstead airfield,
a USAF WW2 B17 Flying fortress base.

An info post come memorial at the Nuthampstead base next to the Woodmans Arms pub.
